Differences Between HR Generalist and Human Resources Services

I’m Tamica Sears has over 15 years of experience working in the capacity of a Human Resources Professional throughout a variety of different industries ranging from animal medicine to missile defense. I have a true passion for leadership development and have a great time coaching leaders and facilitating training that help leaders bring their best selves to work every day. When I think about my humble beginnings as a Personnel Clerk, in an after-school job handed to me by my older sister, I can’t help but be grateful each and every day that I have had the opportunity to turn that into doing work that I truly love.

A few years after finishing my Master’s Degree in Leadership at Northern Arizona University, I had the pleasure of attending the Institute for Integrative Coach Training which allowed me to develop and hone my skills as an Executive Coach. Attending this training raised the bar for me as a Human Resources Business Partner and a leader, solidifying in my mind that coaching is an essential tool that every leader needs to master. It also helped me become a better mentor, helping people new to the Human Resources profession orient faster and learn more about the fast-changing environment that we now operate in. At the onset of training I thought that it would be remedial learning but it was not. I began to understand that I didn’t have a true coaching skillset as giving feedback and coaching are two different things. I quickly discovered that when it comes to changing behaviors, coaching wins every time. I learned many thing, such as how to enter a conversation assuming positive intent, and to view things through a different lens, not clouded by my own judgments. Those two skills alone were life changing.

My work as a coach gives me the opportunity to act as a trusted partner, guiding leaders through a process of gaining skills, confidence and self-awareness, that allows them to overcome obstacles, build high performing teams and crush their business goals. I have been fortunate in my career as I have been able to have my Human Resources profession and my Coaching profession work in tandem, doing internal and external coaching.

The work that I do helping leaders begin to identify and eliminate blind spots has been extremely beneficial in terms of helping leaders understand the need for diversity and inclusion. It is work that I am very proud of and is at the core of everything that I do. I have been fortunate in my career as I have been able to have my Human Resources profession and my Coaching profession work in tandem, doing internal and external coaching. Having worked in corporate America for so long, I understand the need for organizations to change drastically or run the risk of becoming stagnant and then obsolete. Unless leaders being to have more of an open mind to innovative ideas and ways of thinking, which only comes through having diverse teams, organizations run the risk of being quickly outpaced by those with leaders at the helm who see the business and human implications for diversity.
